II. Answers to Various Questions
A. Marriage and Virginity
It is good for a man not to touch a woman. But to avoid fornication let every man have his own wife, and every woman her own husband. The wife has not power over her own body but the husband. Likewise, the husband has not power over his own body but the wife. You can abstain for fasting and prayer then come together again to avoid those temptations of Satan. To the unmarried and widows, it is good to abstain. But if you cannot contain then marry.
In all things let every man walk as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called everyone.
Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God. Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called. Let every man do what he is called by God to do. Even if he does not like it, he has been bought with a price. Don’t be the servants of men but be the servants of God.
B. Food Offered to False Gods
General Principles
As to touching things offered to Idols, we know that we all have knowledge. But if a man thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. But if any man loves God, the same is known of him.
Concerning eating those things offered to Idols. We know that an Idol is nothing in the world, and there is none other God but one. For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth. To us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him. One Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
The Claims of Knowledge
There is not in every man that knowledge. For some with conscience unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol. And their conscience being weak is defiled. But meat commend us not unto God, eat or don’t eat, we are no better or worse. But let not our freedom become a stumbling block unto the weak. For if any man sees you which has knowledge sit at meat in the idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols? So, though it makes no difference for you if you eat or do not eat that which was offered to the idols, if it causes your brother to offend. When you sin against the brother and wound his weak conscience, you sin against Christ.
Paul Invokes his own Example
If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord. Though I Paul be free from all men, yet I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.
A Warning and the Lessons of Israel’s History
Our forefathers were all Baptized unto Moses. And did all eat the same spiritual meat. And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Wherefore let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. There has no temptation taken you, but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.
Sacrificial Feasts. No Compromise with Idolatry
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifice’s partakers of the altar? But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: you cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.
Food Sacrificed to Idols Practical Solutions
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience’s sake: For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof. If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience’s sake. But if any man says unto you, this is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience’s sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof. Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
C. Decorum in Public Worship
Women’s Behavior at Services
Paul continues with, be followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. But every woman that prays or prophesied with her head uncovered dishonors her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman for the man. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman, but all things of God.
The Lord’s Supper
For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the New Testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
There are specific areas concerning the act of Communion at the Church at Corinth that Paul is particularly upset about. He speaks about divisions, and heresies. He references in eating everyone takes before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.
But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
Only portions of the scripture are represented in the written summaries however, the narration on the video includes the books in their entirety.
