Let’s explore the parable New Cloth and New Wine. Let’s look at an interpretation about how Jesus teaches us the New Covenant and it’s relationship to Law vs. Grace…
Luke 5:33-39
33 And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?
34 And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
36 And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
37 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
38 But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
This parable can be found in the Bible in 3 passages:
Dr. Luke’s version is similar to Matthew and Mark’s with an added part at the end. There are people that think the Bible is full of mistakes, they are wrong. The gospels are examples of 3 writers who told their stories by the inspiration of the the Holy Spirit, with their personal take on their versions.
The Pharisees were again trying to catch Jesus in a trap. It was Jewish custom to follow the Law and Fast a lot.
Jesus came to change things. To show that he is the way to heaven and that keeping the Law in order to get to heaven was not the way to go.
Through this parable of the New cloth and New wine Jesus was showing them the difference between the Old Covenant where people had to keep the Law in order to show and be righteous vs the New covenant Of salvation by grace through faith.
Jesus predicted his death, burial, and resurrection when he told them that the day would come when the Bridegroom would be gone. It would be then that his bride i.e. his followers, will fast and pray.
There are people that don’t like change. They can’t handle change. They prefer the old ways of doing things. Dr. Luke added this detail to his story when he showed that some people believe the old wine is better.
The Law cannot take away sin but shows us our sins. Only Jesus can forgive and take away your sins forever. Trust Jesus today by faith and accept his Salvation.
