The Second Letter of Peter
2 Peter 1 , 2 Peter 2 & 2 Peter 3
The Generosity of God
He begins with a greeting to all. Beginning a discussion of God’s promises and knowledge that he has imparted on us. Speaking about knowledge of godliness, glory and virtue. Indicating we are able to partake of the divine nature and escape the corruption through lust. He says we will find diligence, temperance and patience. And if these things remain in us we will not be barren and will be fruitful in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Simon Peter continues that those who lack those things are blind. They do not see what is coming and they forget that they have been purged of their old sin.
So he urges his brethren to remain diligent. To make their calling and election sure so that they will not fall. Assuring us that we will gain entrance to the everlasting kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Simon Peter becomes the Apostolic Witness . He talks about the truth of Jesus Christ assuring all that this account was no fable. That Jesus Christ was surely Divine and was in the Favor of Almighty God. Jesus was granted honor and Glory. Peter assures us that he witnessed his majesty. That he overheard the voice that came from heaven proclaiming that Jesus was the son of God and that God was pleased with him.
The Value of Prophecy
He equates Prophecy to a light that shines for us in the dark, He warns that no prophecy in scripture is subject to private or individual interpretation that in fact it is divine in its composition. He assures us that it is from the Holy ghost spoken to the Holy men.
Simon Peter warns also of false prophets that were among the people. And warns of the false teachers of the future. Those who bring forth damnable heresies and even deny the Lord. And through their covetousness will make merchandise of you. And their long time judgement and damnation does not linger or sleep.
He warns us to learn from the past. Simon Peter reminds us that God cast down the Angels touched by evil, that God destroyed the world by flood to remove the evil within and that God reined down judgement on Sodom and Gomorrha with Fire. He delivered just punishment for the wicked.
But God knows how to remove the righteous from being subject to seeing and hearing the actions that bring pain to his heart. God will remove his people from the temptations and reserve the timing for the rectification of the unjust.
He refers to the ungodly men as evil brute beasts who are made to be taken and destroyed. That they speak ill of the things they do not know. Their own corruption will be their undoing and they will perish.
There is a vast description of the sins and evil which is resulting from their behaviors. And a reference is made to the story of Balaam and the donkey who speaks to him to save him from the Archangel ready to strike him down on the road, though he does not go into detail.
He then speaks about swelling words of vanity being spoken by the evil men. How they promise liberty but are servants of corruption. He then goes on to say that for those who found the truth in the Lord and fell back into the evil it is worse for them than if they had never know the truth.
The Day of the Lord
The prophets and apostles are referenced to remember what has been told you by them as to the truth of what transpired.
He warns of the false teachers amoung you. That in the last days their will be those scoffing at you and obsessed in their own lusts. Mocking your belief asking you where is this messiah why has he not come to save you. They will be laughing.
But he tells us to be patient and to understand that to God a day can be like a thousand years. and a thousand years can be like a day. That he loves us so much that he wants to save all of us and give us ample time for repentance.
So he calls us all to holiness, to remain steadfast in our wait for the Lord. To keep ourselves in service to God, to remain clean of the wickedness, unblemished and obedient. He wishes us to grow in Grace and the knowledge of God.
I must say that reviewing this series the Seven Letters to Christians really is opening my eyes. When I notice the suggested correlation to what is happening in our lives today it is really amazing. Clearly there is a plan and instructions for us in that plan. Of course as with everything pray for discernment.
For the Love of God,
