The Letter to the Hebrews
Summary; The Book of Hebrews – Part Two
Hebrews 7, Hebrews 8, Hebrews 9 & Hebrews 10
Christ’s Priesthood Higher than Levitical Priesthood
Melchizedek
A discussion of Melchizedek the King of Salem and God’s priest who met Abraham and blessed him returning from the slaughter of the kings. Describing how Abraham paid a tenth of his spoils to Melchizedek as the King of righteousness, and priest of God.
Melchizedek Accepted Tithes from Abraham
Suggesting the greatness of Melchizedek due to the action of a tenth of the wealth being paid by Abraham. And Abraham the patriarch of the people giving this respect to Melchizedek. They of the sons of Levi inheriting the office of the priesthood having a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law. But Melchizedek not of the lineage of the sons of Levi is paid tithes by Abraham.
From Levitical Priesthood to the Priesthood of Melchizedek
If perfection were in the Levitical priesthood what need would there be for the rise of another priest under the order of Melchizedek and not be called after the order of Aaron? And Priesthood changes necessitate a change in the law. He was a priest not of the Levitical priesthood.
The Abrogation of the Old Law
And then after Melchizedek arises another Priest. Who is not of the law of a carnal commandment but out of everlasting life. And it is testified that there is a priest ever after the order of Melchizedek. And there is a dismantling of the commandment due to the weakness and unprofitableness. For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did. Bringing us closer to God.
Christ’s Priesthood is Unchanging
Christ is made a priest ever after of the order of Melchizedek. And before him there were many priests. But they were not suffered to continue by reason of death. But Christ because he continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. And he is able to save them that come to him for intersession before God, for he lives eternal.
The Perfection of the Heavenly High Priest
Christ as a high priest who is Holy. He is undefiled separate from sinners. He is made higher than the heavens. Who does not need to offer daily sacrifice for he sacrificed his own blood, his own life once for the sins of mankind. He is high priest eternal.
Superiority of the Worship Sanctuary and Mediation of Christ
The New Priesthood and the New Sanctuary
We now have a high priest who is set on the right hand of Almighty God. And God has appointed him heir of all things. Upholding all things by the word of his power, purging our sins then he sat down at the right hand of God.
Christ is the Mediator of a Greater Covenant
If the first covenant had been faultless there would not have been need for a second covenant. But the Lord says that the day will come when he will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. God says he will put his laws into their minds and write them into their hearts. He will be to them their God and they will be to him, his people. And there will be no need to teach that he exists for all will already know him.
Christ Enters the Heavenly Sanctuary
The worldly sanctuary is described. The first tabernacle, the ark of the covenant, the golden censor and the golden pot. And the priests would go into the first tabernacle daily accomplishing the service of God. The high priest alone would go into the second once a year offering a blood sacrifice for himself and for the people. Even with the gifts and sacrifices they could not make him that did the service perfect.
Christ comes of a more perfect tabernacle. Not of a building, not of the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood. Entering in only once for the eternal redemption of us all.
Christ Seals the New Covenant with his Blood
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood. Purification by the blood is necessary; and without shedding of blood there is no remission. The purification of the heavenly things required better sacrifices than the worldly blood of goats and calves. For Christ does not enter into the worldly sanctuary but enters heaven itself through the shedding of his own blood only once, to redeem us in the presence of God.
Summary: Christ’s sacrifice superior to the Sacrifices of Mosaic Law
The Old Sacrifices Ineffective
The sacrifices year after year could not continually make the comers perfect. If they did they would not need to be repeated year after year. Once the worshipers had been purged of their sin and purified they should have had no more conscience of sin. But they needed to repeat it every year because it is not possible that the blood of the animals could take away the sins.
so Jesus came to earth in the flesh. He was given a body. Because the sacrifice, offerings and burnt offerings for sin did not please God through the law. So Jesus came to do God’s will removing the first in order to establish the second through offering the body of Christ once and for all.
The Efficacy of Christ’s Sacrifice
So the priests came daily offering sacrifices for sin which could not purify. But Christ Jesus offered his blood and his life one sacrifice for sins for ever. He then sat down at the right hand of God. Waiting until the time that his enemies would be subjected under him. By one offering he had perfected those who are sanctified.
Persevering Faith
The Christian Opportunity
Therefore, by the blood of Jesus we are granted boldness to enter into the holiest. And with a high priest at the right hand of God let us draw near with a true heart with full assurance of faith. Assembling together in worship, supporting, exhorting one another.
For if we sin willfully after we have received the full knowledge of the truth from the Holy Spirit, there remains no more sacrifice available to us for sins. Leaving us only the fear of judgment and fiery indignation which shall devour the heavenly adversaries.
Motives for Perseverance
But remember the days when you endured a great fight of afflictions, were made a mockery of and yet had compassion of the suffering of Christ. Accepting the persecution of your faith joyfully knowing that you now have a better place in heaven.
Continue to stand strong in your confidence and your faith which promises a great reward. You must have patience that after you have followed the will of God you will be granted your promises. Christ will return.
The just will live by faith but those who draw back will have no place…
