The Lost Coin
Let’s explore the parable of The Lost Coin. Jesus teaches us that we must light the way and lead the lost back into the light. And there will be great rejoicing in the Kingdom of Heaven.
The Lost Coin
How many of us have ever lost something that was important to us? We all have I’m sure. When we lose it do we shrug it off and say “oh well”. I think not. We search and hunt for the missing item until we find it. Oh and how excited we feel once we do find it. We get excited and share the fact that the item is found with our friends.
This is about a Jewish woman. She had ten coins on a headband that signified she was a married woman. In those days if a woman shamed or dishonored her husband he would remove one of those coins as a sign of her disobedience.
One day she lost one of her coins. She lit a lamp and looked and looked until she found her lost coin. She called to her friends to announce her lost coin was found It was their version of our modern day wedding ring.
Luke 15:7-10 (NIV)
7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
In this story the coin represents people who are lost in their sins and don’t realize they are lost. They are helpless. Unlike the lost sheep who wandered away under their own power, the coin was lost due to another’s carelessness. Even though the coin is lost it still has value and is precious. The coin bears the image of the ruler of the day.
The woman represents The Church. The lamp represents the Word. The coin is a lost soul.
We are the woman by means of sharing the Gospel with the lost. They don’t know just how lost they are until we share the Love of God with them. The Holy Spirit then draws them unto repentance.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Together with God and His Word the lost coin (soul) can be found.
When the coin is found Heaven rejoices!
So Church while we still have the opportunity, let’s go seeking the lost coins.
God Bless You
